Seacocks

There are a few basic SEACOCKS:

Ball, Gate and Cylinder (symmetric & asymmetric) Seacock types.

Seacocks need to be easily accessible and operable. Regular exercise is required to assure safety. These are probably the most neglected items on most vessels and should have the most attention. In my opinion all seacocks should be closed at all times except for the time of usage. Gate valves need regular disassembled service due to the type of construction (many moving parts that could fail). If any type of electrolytic or corrosive activity on any under water metal is found all valves need to be checked immediately (especially gate valves). Electrolytic / corrosive activities will soften the ‘worm gear tips or threads’ and the spade will not move as intended. It may stay in open position.

All other seacock (types) surfaces need to be checked for scared surfaces as well.
