| Did you know every major,
commercial marine venture, fishing fleets, shipping fleets and work boats ALL take regular
oil and fuel samples from their operating equipment? Safety, profit and machine condition
go hand-in-hand!
Oil analyses
programs are designed to measure wear, contamination and oil degradation. Knowing
the condition of your engine, generator and reduction gears through regular oil testing
can save thousands of dollars in needless repair bills and save additional money by
optimizing oil changes. Fuel analysis can save you from serious problems while at sea due
to water and microbial growth plugging the filter. To learn more about how oil analysis

Oil Analysis
An oil analysis
identifies the inside condition of an engine; i.e., wear and tear of moving parts.
It is suggested to regularly take an analysis depending on type & usage of vessel- to
create a consistent picture (also good for a possible sale later).
Important Items:
The owner or
his representative shall provide a log of day/month/year and engine/generator hours of
last oil changes. (Suggest having a tag at the engine/generator identifying this
information as well as engine serial and model numbers)
The type of
oil used.
If any oil has
been added, what type and how much for each engine or generator.
Before drawing
an oil sample, the engine should run for a minimum of 20 minutes, preferably under load
for best results. Without this proper oil change log an oil analysis will not be
accurate. Each type of oil has its own amount of metal particles (parts per
million.) When incorrect information is given, it will lead to the wrong conclusion. For
example, the oil analysis can show a high copper or other metal usage which could lead to
the conclusion that a possible high bearing wear is happening inside the engine. When indeed, more oil than logged had been
added from the same or different brand and could cause unnecessary action and/or
aggravation.
